Hive Media Office

Objective: To propose a conceptual design of an office space in an existing building that enhances work productivity and promotes well-being for all occupants.

Project Overview

HIVEmedia’s office was designed to support a vivid atmosphere where geometric shapes resemble nature, and natural light illuminate all working areas. The design intends to capture the value of versatility and inclusivity on all levels by encompasing functional materials, adaptable furniture, and flexible spaces.

Company Culture

HIVEmedia’s mission is to instill a working environment that accepts differences and portrays that through its inviting interiors and the company’s work produced. When hiring, the company will nurture this value by prioritizing an individual’s personality over experience and skill.

Site Background

HIVEmedia’s office is located in the historic Pilkington Paint & Glass Warehouse. The building is found at 400 11 Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, in the Beltline District. The office’s interior occupies the fourth floor of the building in an area of 4,935 sf (458 m2). According to the Beltline’s district website, the Pilkington brothers built the warehouse during World War I (1913). As evidence, the brothers profoundly incorporated their British glass business to promote extended interior daylight and demonstrate technological advancements to improve a space’s function and aesthetic. The building’s front facade portrays an Edwardian commercial style representing classical cornices with dentils and brick walls in three different storefronts united into one. The contrasting nature of the exterior, combining an Edwardian style with rustic elements, is translated similarly to the interiors; instead of Edwardian, the new space conveys the current time. Therefore, the interior ambiance preserves the rustic building envelope with additions of contemporary approaches. Due to the building’s evolving nature to rent for commercial purposes, the interior was renovated so the incoming tenants could easily modify the electrical wiring on the floor.
